Osage health issue
« on: March 27, 2011, 10:36:00 AM »
I think I might have issues with green Osage. My head is really messed up and I am waiting on my MRI results. Anyone ever had problems with it?

Ranger, different folks react differently to each type of wood. If you are adversely affected by green osage, protect yourself from the dust and the sap.

It makes my nose run like a sugar tree, but then I have seasonal alergies and we live right in the middle of a pasture with all kinds of trees and shrubs around. So I can't really blame anything on the Osage. I know that when juniper is high the cedar trees right next to the garage look like they are smoking from all the pollen blowing off them and that's when my head gets all messed up and I start wheezing, and eyes itching.

If you ever want to see how much pollen and crap is flying in the air, just walk outside at night and shine a flashlight straight out from ya. Look in the beam of the light and you can see a gazillion little particles that look like somebody shook a bag of flour beside ya. Uuuuuggghhh!!

I had pneumonia once from breathing too much osage dust.

Osage has an addictive quality that affects me  :D

Ranger3, if you don't mind me asking, what kind of symptoms are you having related to the osage?

The first seven or eight years I built Osage selfbows I used an 4 ½” grinder to do a lot of shaping, which created lots of dust.  Even though I wore the cheap dust masks while working on bows, the dust would swell/clog up my sinuses and the eyes puffed up.  Getting a band saw and dust collector alleviated most of my problems with osage, and other woods like Ipe.  The dust collector is always going when using machinery, files, or anything else that makes dust, in the shop.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

It's a feeling in my head that is hard to describe. It kinda feels like all the blood goes to my head and then goes away. it only lasts about 30 seconds but it is real often and leaves me with a head ache. Like I said it is hard to describe. The doctor ordered a MRI and I go back to see him Wednesday because it may not be wood related.

Ranger, wish you the best, hope all goes well.  I've personally never have had any problems with osage, but a friend who I've been helping get one roughed out told me both times he was here and we used the band saw to shape and oasage bow, he had bad head cold symptons for a week afterwards.....Dan

That doesn't sound allergy related to me.  I have suffered about every kind of allergic reaction possible short of shock.  Osage messes with me when green with dermatitis.  A lot of dust in the air will cause sinusitis.  I wear  respirator.
Take a kid hunting!
