I recently ordered some lams from Kenny M for the first time, and it was a great experience. He didn't know me from Adam, but he shipped the material before even telling me what I owed him. Good guy. Were it that all internet business is transacted that way.

But another option, especially if you live in Northern Illinois or Wisconsin, is The Old Master Crafter at 130 Lebaron St., Waukegan, IL 60085 (847-623-2660). John Girardi is the owner. He has a huge selection of lams and riser blocks (I think he sells to a lot to the bigger manufacturers) and he is meticulous about quality. I don't recall where I found out about Old Master Crafter, but I drove up from Chicago to his shop and, besides some amazing, bookend birdseye maple lams and fiberglass, I got a good hour and a half education in bow making and lam selection at the expense of his Saturday morning. He even threw in plans and a template for a very nice hybrid bow design. On my second visit, he gave me a 72" x 2" x 1/8" piece of purpleheart for $5. (I guess I'll try to use it to back a 3/4" thick ipe stave I have. Will that work?)

 No order is too small and his prices (of course, he didn't have to ship in my case) beat the heck out of Binghams and Rudderbow.

Old Master Crafter has no internet presence at all (not even an email address that I know about), but they're worth a call -- a visit, if possible.

Ooh. I just re-read my last post and I might've made it sound like Kenny was doing something nefarious by not telling me what I owed him until he shipped. That's not the case. I knew what the stuff I ordered would cost, I just didn't know his shipping costs, so I couldn't pay him until he got around to telling me. He knew I was in a hurry, so he shipped to me before getting paid. He hadn't done business with me before, had no reason to trust me, but shipped anyway. You don't find that kind of trust very often anymore, and you gotta appreciate it when you do.
