Ivory Limb Tips
« on: April 26, 2011, 05:29:00 PM »
I was given some ivory, and thought I would like to use it as a limb tip.Any thoughts as to why this should not be done?If it's o.k.to do,is there any special treatment for the ivory before gluing it up with smooth-on?

Should make great tips.  How old is the Ivory?  I have used it for pens and sometimes it will crack if to fresh or thin.  Use Superglue to attach it.

I use CA also. That ivory should look very cool.

I purchased some mammoth ivory a few months ago to put on some "special" bows. Just put some on a bow last week. I used a thin strip over some phenolic...and where the string actually rests I filed through the ivory so the string is actually resting on the underlying phenolic overlay. I didn't want the ivory to carry any load and possibly crack. It is much ivory, but it is there...and it is estimated to be 10,000-50,000 years old.

I used CA gel.
Until next time...good shooting,
Lee

Ivory has been successfully used for overlays by bowyers for years.  Since the advent of CA glue, it is far easier to attach than before.
