BBO Trade Bow off the caul today
« on: June 04, 2011, 12:37:00 AM »
Just glued this one up this morning and cleaned up the edges tonight. Too hot to work on it during the day, got up to near 100 deg. today and even hotter inside the garage. What is up with this crazy weather? This is like August kinda hot!

Anyway, here's a couple pics of the osage stave I started with and then further down some pics of the stave with the boo glued on it after clean up.

This will be my Swap Bow providing everything goes as planned. Probably start tillering on it tomorrow morning, until it gets hot anyway.

Some pretty severe prop twist, coupled with side to side dips, and up/down dips all in one. This is what I'm used to working with, but I gotta say that this pushed put my straightening skills to the limit.    :knothead:

I hear ya on the goofy stinking weather.  More power to you on straightening that thing.  The BBO looks sweet too.  I've yet to work with Osage but I'm gonna have to find some to dig my hands into.  Good luck on the rest of the build I'm sure you will do a fine job

Thanks Kelly and D, it's not the osage selfbow that my recipient asked for, but I don't think anybody would have a problem with a little boo added to it do ya? I like building BBO's and the R/D seems to hold it's shape well when a backing is added to it.

Hey D, that is the same bow. The first pics are the "Before" straightening and the last pics are the "After" straightening with the boo glued on it.

Thats alot of straightening.

Thanks Big!
Yep, the stave was plenty dry so I used dry heat. The caul makes straightening alot easier and I toasted the belly while it was clamped in the caul form. It makes gluing up the bamboo backing alot easier too if you already have the osage prebent to the shape you want, that way it doesn't fight you when clamping it all down during glue up.

Lots of time, patience, and some bull headed determination doesn't hurt either Jake.   :knothead:

Nice looking bow, SEMO. Are the limbs a uniform thickness from fades to tips? And how wide at the widest point?
I have an osage stave that I worked down to about 1 3/4" wide by 3/4"-1" thick. Can't decide how I want to procede.

Thanks guys, they aren't uniform yet Red cause it's not tillered yet. It just came off the caul yesterday evening.
It's 1 1/4" wide at the fades and straight taper down to 1/2" at the tips. Handle section isn't finished yet but it will taper inward at the center when I'm done. Thinking about doing an ambidextrous handle with this one without a cut out or arrow shelf, and just shoot off the top of the handle wrap/knuckle? Dunno yet, gotta think about it some more.

Hey Semo,

I love your bows..... I really want a copy of your design for the caul, so that I can make a hunting bow in South Africa.

Thanks for sharing....

Bravo Semo looks like the caul is working out great for you. I have one in the oven right now on a different caul design that I am using. Looks good man

Thanks fellas. Each one seems a little easier and better than the one before it, but that's how it's supposed to work isn't it. I learn a little something on each one I build.

I love the caul and haven't regretted a single second since I made it. It's not my design I got it from DVShunter so thanks to him for helping out a budding bowyer.
