if you cant get any i can cut you some thin chrome tan cowhide or goathide lace/thong and send you some.( same as the roo- just local leather- not tooo many roo up here!)
how long do you need it.
Tandy will also sell bags of offcuts, for handle wraps etc. and some nifty lacing needles too.

Looking at the thong/lace/strips of leather that's wrapped around the shelf I have a question.  Does it affect arrow flight at all or is it just an addition to the strike plate/rest?  I do like the looks of that wrap!

Well said Rainman,
Skilled craftsman handed things down to apprentices they Chose. Often not giving away every secret. Nothing wrong with having a signature technique not shared with strangers.

You did a good job on the handle wrap VB, I don't care who came up with it first. Maybe I shouldn't back any more bows with bamboo since it wasn't originally my idea?

You were able to build your bamboo backed bow with help from a lot of people on this site SEMO.  Most people would attribute the way we build bamboo backed bows today to Dean Torges and his video.  He sold the information or gave it to close friends.  Now everyone has the information but I'm sure Dean still has tips he only gives to people he knows.  I know there are tips on the video that a lot of people who haven't bought the video are missing out on.  So who is right?

So rainman anyone one builds a bow and uses another bowyers design for a pattern is in the  wrong? Casting a pretty wide net there and stepping on alot of toes here.

Did'nt say that at all.  A bowyer who does this for money should'nt be expected to give away his secrets.  If he wants to that is fine. And there are a lot of great bowyers who do this in one on one or group situations like Gary Davis, J. D. Jones and John Strunk. If they ask someone they give a tip to, not to pass it along I have no problem with that.

I agree that if you dont want your methods to get out and be used you should patent them.  That would be the only way.

so hard, and costly to patent a process- and difficult to police. and the slightest variance nullifies the patent.
besides, copying would be a pretty high form of flattery, if the originator was not feeling it in the pocket book of course.
and in this specific case a handle wrap is hardly going to matter- but hey this is Strunks idea- and he gets to do with it whatever he pleases.

Just having a patent doesn't save you. You have to have the resources to go after someone legally that stole your patented idea once they steal it. And if you don't have the resources yourself and expect the thief to pay the cost of you going after him he must have some value because you can't get blood from a turnip. Patents really only work when a lot of money is involved. There is not a lot of money in this field. Most of us are turnips.

I think the whole discussion has just gotten to the point of being ridiculous. If a guy doesn't want anybody to put his handle wrap on their bow then he should have locked up all his bows with this style wrap on them and never let them see the light of day.
I'm not taking anything away from the man because I don't even know him. I'm sure he must be one hell of a bowyer with the way everybody keeps carrying on about him.

Regardless, it's just a different way to wrap leather around the handle of a bow and that's it, nothing more.....nothing less.
It's not any different than somebody really liking the way another guy stains his bamboo backing and decides to do that on his next BBO.

I have no desire to wrap my bow handles that way, but treating it like it's the lost arc or the holy grail is just a bit much.......don't ya think?

I saw this same discussion over on PA and it got extremely heated and I think the mods ended up shutting it down, so I'll move away from this one before it gets to that point.
It doesn't really matter how many ways I try to explain my position on it anyway because somebody is just going to keep punching holes in it. So you all can keep debating it until your blue in the face.

I'm also a turnip by the way Jason.   :readit:

I'm a turnip too. I'll also take any bow I like and trace the profile onto a form and copy it exactly.
