Help me with thickness sander project.
« on: June 24, 2011, 06:54:00 PM »
Hello friends,

I'm thinking about building a thickness sanders. To build it I have a motor of 0'5hp and 2800rpm. Do you think that this motor is appropriate for this porpuse? or is it too quick?
If you think that this motor is ok, which size of pulleys would you use?

Thanks in advance.

turmoiler,
I just finished up a homemade thickness sander based on what I have seen here and the pictures of this aluminum model being sold:   http://www.vanda-layindustries.com/html/the_hog_sander.html

Their description said they used a motor of 1750 rpm's.  The motor I had on hand is a 1725 rpm, too, but the pulley's I had in stock could give me a 2300+ rpm speed or a 1350 rpm speed.  I opted for the lesser at 1350 rpm to be sure it wasn't too fast for the application.  If I didn't like it I figured I could always swap the pulleys and speed it up.  So far the lesser speed seems to do the job of sanding the laminations just fine.
I have found this site:   http://www.csgnetwork.com/pulleybeltcalc.html
to be incredibly helpful in mixing and matching the pulleys on my different motorized machines.
Hope this helps,
Christopher

Thanks for the info cristopher.
I think that my motor spins too quick. I'm going to use some pulleys to reduce the rpm to 2/3 or so from the current speed. That link from csg is very useful to  make some calculations. And About the hog, I live far from the states and it's not an option ordering it, i'm going to try to build the all wood model that was posted on this board some time ago.
