I need arrows
« on: February 20, 2008, 03:20:00 PM »
I just recieved my 1966 Bear Grizzly. It's 52# and 58 inches long. I am going to the city this weekend to get some arrows for it. My archery shop has mainly carbons. What should I look for in an arrow for this bow? Do I need feathers or can I use vanes? I will be shooting off the shelf. Also, I think I'll have a new string put on at the same time. If I shoot 1 over and 2 under, where does my nock point need to be set? Thanks for the help, this is quite interesting.

Ed,

re: you questions, if you're shooting off the shelf feathers will be much better than vanes to make an arrow fly well.

as for shafts; wood, aluminum and carbon all work.  Woodies seem to be the highest maintanence and carbons seem to be the toughest, at least in my experience.  The fun part is the trying different stuff out.

as for knock point, suggest you start at 3/8 to 1/2 inch high.

I think what you're really asking is a series of questions about tuning bow to arrows.  That involves regulating brace height (twisting the bow string); adjusting knock height (to acheive good arrow flight); adjusting arrow weight (start at 10 grains per pound of draw weight and go up or down from there to achieve shot silence) and most important a consistent anchor point for shot consistency.

Enjoy the process

try puting ya nock 1/2" above 90% and move it up or down untill ya arrows group nice. fly good etc etc of corse ya want to bare shaft test ya arrows this is allways agood thing. as for arrows if ya use legacy shafts and your draw length is say 28" you can use a 2016 or a 2018 with a 150 grn head up front.

Ed,

Any chance you could make it to Edmonton to go shoot in the ATBA D.A.R.T. League this Friday??  If so, you are welcome to meet me at Wholesale Sports and come out and shoot with us as well as get some great pointers on gear and setup.  I will leave from near Wholesale Sports @4:45 or so.  If you can come, I think you would REALLY enjoy yourself.  If you can't make it, but are coming into the city on Saturday, let me know and I will try to work out a time to meet you and give a hand.

Many thanks Brian. I can't make it on Friday as I'm working, and I have to work this saturday as well, but I  am planning a trip into Edmonton on Monday. Is this league something you do every Friday?

Yes it is.

Go to albertatraditionalbowhunters.com to see about it.

Mondays are my days off, so maybe we can get together sometime.  Call me if you can and we can talk about it and a source for some arrows for you as well.

I never found wood arrows to be high maintanence, I always had problem's with aluminum arrows more so than wood. JMO I think wood arrows would do that bow proud.

Gold Tip 3555 front loaded with 200 - 250 grains will shoot through any animal in North America out of that bow.

Thanks everyone. Brian,do you ever shoot at Sherwood Park archery lanes? I'm going to go there on Monday, hopefully they can build me a new string, mine looks kinda old. Also, I think they sell mainly Easton, are there good ones to get from them that aren'too pricey?

Ed,

I was planning on building you a string (no cost) and have a good source for some inexpensive arrows as well.  I could come over and we could shoot some at the lanes together monday.  If you want to give me a call tomorrow sometime, we can plan something.  The number I put up there is my cell and is with me ALL the time.

Brian

Pay no attention to 4runr, he has been breathing too much yellow wood dust!!  LOL!!

Thanks everyone, for all your help. Carbon Caster is getting me all hooked up, and I'll hopefully get some shooting instruction from him on Monday. I'm also currently trying to make a bow out of a redf oak board, we'll see how that goes.
