« on: August 22, 2011, 09:32:00 PM »
what are the preferred depth of arrow shelves
1.cut to center
2.cut shy of center
3.cut past center.
   and by how much???

what works and doesnt work for you guys.
trying to make a decision in this regard.
with regards to the selfbows i have built , i have been dictated too by the specific piece of wood- and then tuned the arrows to suit.

I personally like 1/16"-1/8" past center.

I always liked center shot on glass bows to allow a stiffer spine which usually meant a heavier arrow.

For glass bows I have been cutting and sanding between 1/8 -3/16 past center.. I like 3/16 past center on my recurves. I use diamondwood or wood lamanated with glass for strength in my risers

I like past center for reason above, easier finding arra spine, but like Robert said, be sure to laminate the riser, and also, make a radius at the junction of shelf and side plate. A square corner there will crack a lot quicker than a radiused one.
Stay sharp, Kenny.
