I Hate Tape (Tape Removal HELP)
« on: August 27, 2011, 08:34:00 PM »
I am finishing a BBB bow that already had the back stained and then taped to protect the stain job.  I went to take off the tape and most of the glue stuck to the back.  I did not apply the tape so i don't know what they used.  Question: what can i use to remove the tape glue from the boo?  Can i get this off without wrecking the stain job?  The tape glue must come off, if i have to, i can re-stain.  If need be, what are you guys using to stain the boo?
Thanks for the help.

Believe it or not, I've had great success with Womens facial make-up remover wipes. Got the idea from a boaters forum who use them to remove old stickers from fiberglass boat hulls. Just used it to remove 30 year old duct tape residue from a 59 Kodiak, and doesn't harm finish. Also used it on removing a sticker off a car.
My new favorite goo remover! (scary that women use these wipes on their faces!)
didn't understand - now I do.

Chuprinko, that is a hint to write on the bulletin board. Thanks!

On masking tape, there are a lot of different tapes designed for different uses. Some withstand high temperatures, some provide a clean paint line, some are meant for freshly painted surfaces, some... you get the idea.
Point is, when you choose a masking tape where the job is important, get one meant for the job you're asking it to do. Choose the wrong one and you could have all kinds of grief.
NA, I know you didn't apply the tape but I got an opportunity to lecture and ran with it.

I've used carb and choke cleaner to remove the glue sticky, but never tried it over stain. Stain seems to bleed fairly easy so you might want to try a small area first to see how it will react.
After cleaning the glue off with carb and choke cleaner I go back over and wipe it down with de natured alcohol to remove any residue.

I will give it a try. I used a little de natured alcohol in one spot, and it pulled off most of the stain.  I guess i will worry about the stain and color after the glue is off.  (may have a little goo gone to try)Thanks all.

Ooops...too late.  Was going to tell you that if it's  James Parker blank, don't use a chemical to remove to the tape because it'll affect the dye job.  I've made several bows from Jame's blanks, and the tape removal is tricky.  But be patient, as the dye job underneath is fantastic!

Thanks 4est trekker, the tape was on way too long for it to ever come off right. I used a product called lift off and it removed the tape glue and did not touch the stain.  The tricky part came when i had to remove the oily residue.  I very lightly use denatured alcohol and gave it a quick wipe.  Seemed to clean it up nice.  The dye job still looks good and the finish should stick just fine.  You are correct, it is a James Parker bow and he really does great work.  Thanks Much
