SINEW PREP?
« on: August 28, 2011, 06:58:00 PM »
I just want to know the exact process for preping sinew for backing a bow. like, do i soak it first? also i saw some natural gut hafting material online. could that be used like sinew? or is it different?

thanks a bunch,

john

Once the sinew is dry, I take a smooth hammer and pound it on a smooth surface until it starts to seperate into bundles.  Then I pull it apart into small fibers about the size of a pencil lead.

Dry after removing from the animal, no need to soak it in water.

ed scott, a professional bowyer, says he "hydrates", or soaks, it. then dips it in the glue and then applies it. but do you know about the gut hafting material? i tried to look it up but there isnt much about backing bows with it.
