Best arrows for deer hunting...
« on: September 18, 2011, 10:05:00 PM »
Hey, everyone. Back in the saddle. Summer and baseball season over. Nearly finished with my first takedown recurve and was wondering...

What is the best arrow for deer hunting? Carbon or aluminum. As well as spline for 50#'s?

Archery season is approaching fast here and I'm anxious for my first traditional hunt.

I have used gold tips 55-75 with 100gr brass insert and 150gr broadheads with good results.

Not to sound smart butt'ish here, but the best arrow for hunting is a sharp, straight shooting arrow. Material means absolutely nothing, likewise reagrding broadhead style or brand. Make them sharp, hit them in the ribs and the shows over no matter how you stir it. Enjoy the upcoming season!

As long as they have adequate weight and a sharp point on the end any of them will work. I prefer woodies myself but I have used aluminum and carbon in the past.

My favorite arrow is the one that hits where I'm aiming. There are too many variables to be able to tell you what will work best for you. My glass bows use arrows that are spined 10-20# over draw weight. My self bows use arrows spined 5# under draw weight. As far as material is concerned, I find top quality carbons to be the most durable, with Easton Epic and GT hunter xt being my favorite. When cedar shafts were $10 a dozen I shot a bunch of them, now I prefer something stronger, like ash.
The thing to remember is an arrow that flies perfectly straight with a sharp broadhead will kill any deer it hits, with a good hit of course. A poor flying arrow with a dull or poorly designed broadhead will make for difficult tracking.
I didnt miss, thats right where I was aiming

Too me the "arrow"
is the most important of all our bowhunting equipment. I like making primitive arrow more than anything. It does the killing part. Get what shoots best and stick too it !

Well, if'n I had to pick one, I'd go with the carbon myself. Probably faster, more quite, and  better penetration than aluminum. But give me a hardwood shoot or cane/boo arrow over both anytime.......Art

As has been stated, any of the materials will kill the game with no problem so long as it is properly tuned, sharp, and put in the right place.
But if I had the chance to shoot a piece of crafted art such as Art B. makes, that's a no-brainer. There's little to no mojo or style in a carbon or an aluminum arrow. When was the last time your heart smiled when you looked at a carbon arrow?
