Dryad BBO handle
« on: September 19, 2011, 05:23:00 PM »
Just received a used Dryad BBO and looks cool, I always wanted a BBO. I wanted a lighter bow for my grandughter and to share with my girls but this feels a bit heavy for them, My question is about the handle. There is a sharp ridge straight at me. I seen the website pics and thought it would be rounded. Is there a logical reason for this? I've seen a few selfbows that had a hump and the pics looked similar. I'm tempted to flatten this down with some sandpaper now and put some leather on it to make it like my other bows but I don't want to do something I'll regret later.
Thanks, Daniel

Daniel,
I bought a Dryad BBO about 5 years ago and finished it myself...I rounded it with sanding cloth by putting the bow in a vice wrapped the jaws with layers of leather and sanded it like I was shoe shining the face of the riser/handle!It's hard to tell without seeing pics of your bow but there should of been a D.V.D. that showed the person how to shape the bow...Some folks just like a different style handle then others but it was suppose to have a Bulbous style handle (spelling may be off)! If it doesn't have a shelf for the arrow to rest on there is an easy to follow instruction on the How to section...Mike Westvang of Dryad told me it was easy and the pics are great....You use a few layers of leather, super glue and a rasp....I did it and it was easy...I had a pin knot in my lower limb and after a few years I was out shooting it and midway through my draw my bow exploded...I just got hit in the Noggin but o.k. and my Dryad is now a three pc...  :knothead:

Thanks Keefer,
Well I had to do it. I sanded it down to a straight handle more like my other selfbows/ flatbow, I think that will work for me. Does anyone know what BRACE HT. is on the Dryad BBO. I'm trying it at about 6", it looks natural but it smacks my wrist hard.
I was planning to make a BBO (purchase a glued up blank if availible) when I seen this in the classifieds and thought my girls could use it if light enough. I didn't want a multipiece but this looks like pretty neet and glad I got it. I'm still wanting to make one for myself if I could get a blank somewhere reasonable but I'm leaning towards another osage (maybe mulberry) selfbow more. might find a stave locally and get started when work slows down.

Keefer, did you talk to Mike about the limb blowing up? Mike and Jason do right by their customers. As for second hand bows, I bet they still would have been more than happy to help.
Got wood? - Tom
