O.K. Use a pressure strip of some sort. What I use is use a medium-hard rubber strip over the boo, with a pressure strip made from a 1/4 thick strip ripped from a clean 2X4 on top of the rubber. Thin enough to bend and provides even pressure and protects the boo from the clamps. I've seen thick leather used in place of rubber. Make sure everything is protected with plastic wrap.
Experience will tell you how much glue to mix, but better a little too much. I prefer Urac myself. It fills gaps well and doesn't require a hot box to get that ultimate bond. Mix according to directions. Smooth-on will work though. Do a search for smooth on in subject line of the bowyer's bench section. Plenty of answers there.
To prep the surfaces, you can score them with a fine tooth hacksaw blade clamped between two slats of wood in lieu of a toothing plane
