Too much stain!

i bought what i thought was an unfinished self bow.  perhaps it had some clear coat on it?
i applied oil based stain to the wood and didn't wipe off the excess.  36 hours later the stain is still very tacky.
is there anything i can do at this point to hasten the drying?  or do i just need to wait 15 years or so for it to dry (i'm 65 so that is not my first choice at "fixing" the problem)

Wipe it down with solvent to get rid of the "extra" stain. It may wash-out the stain but you can always apply more if you need it. Most stains will thin with lacquer,so use that for wiping the bow down.

Stains are a wipe on and wipe off deal. Most people wait just a few minutes before wiping off the excess. White woods like maple and hickory don't absorb much stain at all especially oil stains. Try a water based stain or dye they usually get in there better but you may have to lightly sand because it can raise the wood a bit.
