Bow Making questions? Need answers on fiberglass possibilites?
« on: December 03, 2011, 10:26:00 PM »
ive been making bows for a while. I have a few red oak bows under my belt and a fe hickories and maples as well. I live in louisiana and have been scouring the woods for the past few weeks for bow staves. Ive been able to find a total of three hickory staves with unbelievable knots, and a few maples that twist all the way around when they split. i will keep with selfbows when i find staves, but im looking into starting to do some fiberglass laminates. Im only fifteen so my budget is literraly limited to what i get for my birthday and christmas, lol. So i cant waste money on smooth on or any thing like that. i also cant afford fiberglass strips. All i can afford is the biaxial fabric tape and marine boat epoxy. I think it will work because i dont plan on doing a full glass bo but rather just using the glass as extra protection that looks better than an expensive hickor laminate.

PS. I know how all the selfbow people are (i still kinda am one) but i dont want to settle for linen or sinew, because i really want to keep the look of the pretty wood underneath, and hick. backings arent as pretty
