Juniper bow width?
« on: December 05, 2011, 10:00:00 PM »
I have a peace of juniper I have been looking at for months trying to see a bow in it. All I can see is a short bow for a layout at 48" to 50" tip to tip. I plan on sinew backing it and painting it. It may be alittle beyond my bowyer skills but I'm going to try. My question is how wide should I make it?

I don't consider myself especially qualified to answer this, but since there are no other responses so far I'll venture an opinion.

How wide will probably be related to how far you intend to draw the bow and the draw weight you desire.  I would keep it as wide as possible and leave the door open to narrow it while tillering or even after tillering but keeping in mind that weight would be reduced as the limb is narrowed.

I have wanted to try a juniper bow but have not found a piece of wood so far.  See You are in Utah, so we are probably looking at very similar juniper.

For a 58" sinew backed I go around 1.75 inches wide at the fades. Carry that with a slight taper to mid limb, Increase slightly and then the last 12 inches taper down to 1/2" tips.
About 7/8" thick at the fades tapering to 3/4 thick mid limb and 5/8 thick at tips. This is finished dimensions with two coarses of sinew and fish skins. This last bow is right at 60 lbs at my 25" draw.  Tight ringed Juniper from the top side of a large limb. I'll be posting pics soon. Hope that helps you.
Ps. Also check out the sinew/snake skin Juniper that I made for Red Hill on the bow trade pic thread.
