Ash stave ring violated?

I dun a bad thing.   :(  
 Striping the inner bark from an ash stave with the draw knife I sliped and put a pretty good gouge in the outer wood that should have been the outside of the bow.
 Then trying to recover I atempted to simply go down to the next ring , which is not easy. the rings are thin and it is not co-operating like osage does.
 What is my best option, sand till I am almost to the next ring and them scrape? or use some backing and feather out the violated area?
 I realy don't like cloth backing and don't have any sinue to use.

I've chased thin ash rings before and yea it's tough but can be done with a knife scraper. I also had some stain to sharpen up stuff to make it easier to see. Either that or like you said, back it with something. I use linen myself.

I believe I would get a nice clean ring from end to end Pete. Ash is ring-porous wood and not the best set up for violated rings IMO. I love rawhide for backing though......Art

I never tried any backing other than cloth and I don't like cloth backings.  But Rawhide might be a thought, and tonight I was offered some sinue, so that is a real posibility.

If I had adequate thickness remaining yet, I would first try to chase a single ring end to end. What do you have to lose? So you may have to back it? Big deal, woulda had to do it anyway. Put the drawknife away though  

If chasing the ring didn't work out, which material I used to back the bow with would at least partially be determined by other design features of the bow I had in mind. If it was shorter, narrow, reflexed, recurved, had any descrepencies like knots in the back, or runnout, or otherwise pushing the woods limits, I'd use sinew. If it was long, wide, straight, and cleaner, etc. I'd use rawhide.

Hmmm??? Spend an hour pulling your hair trying to chase a ring,or taking ten mins to slap on some rawhide??? That should make it more clear...it does for me anyways.
