Tillering r/d bows
« on: February 01, 2012, 06:21:00 PM »
So when we tiller reflex reflex bows we are aiming for that nice "D" shape at full draw?

I would say yes. From tips to mid-limbs not bending past straight or only slightly reflexed. From mid-limb to fades a circular shape.......Art

I would say Artsy nailed that. 90% of your bend is done tastefully at the mids and fades. They are dang tricky, but a nice reward when your done. Im lazy and just reflex the heck out of my bow now. No more "D" for me, just "R/".

Thanks for the input. I just pulled this from the oven today (and cleaned it up a bit)

More r than d, and a power lam in there, too. Next step is nocks and start to tiller, right? from the tips in?  It's hickory backed hickory with actionwood power lam and riser. 5/16" wide at the tips up to 1 1/2" by the riser, and 5/8" thick to 1/2" at the riser. Suggestions welcomed! This is my 2nd attempt at R/d, first one I hinged pretty bad at the fades and it has lovely chrysals there and at the transition on the bottom limb. Don't know whether to shoot it till it breaks or use it as decoration, but sure was fun learning on it!  Thanks again, and Roy... that's a pretty bow you've got there! I'm going to put those pictures up in my shop as something to aim for!

i have a question on jt's design.  We always hear that the hickory backing should be no more than 1/8th inch thick.  It looks like his backing is as thick as the belly.  Does it not matter so much because both are hickory?

The picture is a bit deceptive. I took the pic from slightly above, so it looks really thick. I cut the backing just shy of 1/8". I actually went back out to the shop to look at it again after posting the pic! Good eyes, though!

Tillering starts tomorrow.  I'll try to get through it without the liquid courage!
