fighting the No Mercy single bevel (sharpening) I DID IT !!!!!!!
« on: February 23, 2008, 12:51:00 AM »
I (like others) have been reading Ashby's reports and want to try the single bevel heads. El Grande's weren't available when I ordered last week, but the No Mercy's were.

I'm very sharpening challenged, I don't have a top, top quality file, so tonight I bought a Smith's system, much like a Lansky but better made
I think

So I've been working using the 25 degree slot ( it has a 25 degree and a 20 degree )

The coarse cuts a lot of steel down, consistant edge (I used a sharpie so I can tell) and I'm working on 'em ..... but geeesh its frustrating !

I don't know if I need to work longer using the medium stones or the soft honing stones or drop from the 25 degree down to the 20 degree or ..... I dunno, I'm just not getting that razor sharp edge I'm looking for    :(

I got all night though (working night shifts)

Anyone have a suggestion ?

I can't help you with the Lansky/Smiths system, I've just been using a good file on them.  They're taking me about 5-7 minutes per side that way, about a third of the time I'd normally spend on a Grizzly.  Taking a smidge off the back of a single bevel helps tremendously also, not much more than taking a little paint off.

guys I've tried to sharpen broadheads and I have NEVER been successful at it

ever

I couldn't do it for 2 hours tonight either. i got CLOSE, but not that shaving sharp like a Thunderhead is. Then I watched the guy sharpening the Zwickey with the Lansky in the How To forum, and noticed how he was filing UP on the edge instead of down. I did that ...... then stropped and my first side set at 25 degrees shaved my arm slick as snot. Took me maybe 3-4 minutes if even that.

WAHOOOOOOOOOO !  I'm so frickin tickled right now.

Brad,
Let me know how those heads shoot for you, I was thinking of trying them out on elk this fall.  If I remember correctly, arent you going this fall and if so where to?

I can't imagine they won't fly good with arrows that spine right bare and all feathered up afterwards. I'm going to start off playing with steel inserts and heavy FOC. I've "tested" Zwickey's before, I know they'll be tough enough for elk.

Brad,
Congratulations! Getting a broadhead shaving sharp for the first time is a great feeling.

I would have recomended a different sharpening system though...  :biglaugh:

Anyway, the important thing is that you got them sharp, good job.

Sharpster - I never clicked on your link before, I'd have inquired before I bought this Smith system if I'd have known about it.

Ron,
Spoke to Ed today...he says you are working on something for single bevels...I'm interested for sure when its done. Would be happy to purchase a prototype to try and report results too..if that is something you might offer.

I shoot grizzly 160's and 190's exclusively.
