Insecticide help (locust borer)
« on: February 14, 2012, 10:37:00 AM »
My friend and I harvested a black locust...while we were splitting the logs into staves we noticed some bug damage throughout the sapwood and heart wood...I believe the damage was from a locust borer.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good insecticide to use?  Also, the bark had been removed and the backs and ends sealed with wood glue.  Will the insecticide penetrate through the seal or do we need to scrape it off?

Thanks!

The locust borer is not the same as the ones that attack osage. The borers that attack  locust eat live trees unlike the osage borer that attacks deadwood. I don't think there is much you can do about them. Around here where I live they are prevelent but in other areas they are not. All I can suggest is harvest your locust from a different location where thay may not be.

Thanks Pat.  Is there a recommended insecticide that can be applied to staves to kill the bugs to prevent them from spreading to other "non-buggy" staves?

Those borers only attack live locusts I believe.

I have had some maple end up with some borer tracks on them from some buggy staves. Now I keep my stave rack and staves covered with spectracide granules.
