Osage billet thickness?
« on: February 20, 2012, 06:36:00 PM »
I have some billets that are 1 1/8" to 1 1/4" thick. Are these usable or do I have firewood  :D  . Thanks,Don

Sounds fine to me. Add a handle section after the splice is glued together. I prefer handle sections on splice bows.

Adding handle pieces is pretty common. You can also add the handle piece before splicing however. This way, for whatever reason, you need to heat straighten in the handle area, this is possible. Adding a handle piece after splicing make this procedure almost impossible.

My money is on yes. Even if you dont have the meat on the billets to fill the sleeves properly. You could cut slats of osage and fill out your billets. Then shape them to fit the sleeves.

1 1/8"x1 1/4" is plenty of osage to make any bow you want if you have the length.
