rounding over the edges of glass limbs?
« on: February 24, 2012, 07:41:00 PM »
I wanted to see how you guys were sanding the edges of glass limbs? I am talking after tiller is set and weight is achieved, Usually I just sand with some 60 grit at about a 45 degree angle on the edges. I then go finer grits. I have also used a "shoe shine" technique with a piece of sand paper. How much sanding or rounding over is enough or too much? thanks Steve

I don't know if there is a right answer.  You definitely don't want a sharp edge to decrease the likelihood of lifting a splinter of glass.  I knock the edge off like you said at a 45, but using a fine toothed rasp.  Then I sand the edges smooth starting with 80 grit and working my way to 320 grit while sanding the rest of the bow.  In doing this I'll lose about 3 pounds in draw weight from when I first get a string on it.
