Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba )

Hey bowyers,
i asked  about making veneers, thickenss ect:
but my questions now is can you use brazilian cherry as a lamination, instead of making a venner from it. or is it to brittle,
i welcome any and all help

should be able to use it fine for lams in a glass bow. It makes a good boo backed bow so I don't see why not. It is weaker in compression than some stuff for a boo bow and the tiller needs to be real good but sandwiched in glass you won't have that issue.

Dvshunter and h8noncubs are both building hickory backed jatoba bows right now. At the building workshop Saturday they were saying its in the same family as Ipe. They know more about it than I do. Maybe one of them will chime in.

I know Jatoba is strong and springy, but I've had problems with it breaking and also warping like crazy after the bow was cut out. Could be I was using poor wood. It was flooring.

I got my jatoba from a hardwood supply store and thats what the guy there told me when we were talking about it. It seems softer than ipe to me.  I just glued up a blank last night, so I will let you know how it works.

Jatoba works well as a bow lamination(glass) bows.I have made one r/d longbow it shot well. I have sold many jatoba backing strips its straight grain and hardness I figured would work well.Its not in ipe family.I dont know how it worked as a backing all wood bows out of my league. Glass bows jatoba works like hickory

Went ahead and goggled it. Turns out they aren't technically in the same family.

I did however learn that Ipe has a class A fire rating...just like concrete and steel lol.

I built a hickory backed jatoba a few years ago (70# @ 28").  I went with a pretty narrow profile and it worked pretty well.  I always heard jatoba has chrysaling problems, but I didn't notice any during my build.
