Olive wood board bow??
« on: March 17, 2012, 01:38:00 PM »
I have a source for olive wood boards, {Flooring} and I am curious if anyone has made bows from Olive wood boards. Of course the grain needs to be good for a bow, and I do not want to use any backing if possible.
 Any input?
 Pete

I have never seen olive wood used for flooring. I always thought it was too expensive for that.
Would you mind if I asked where you can get it?

Thanks Pete. It would be great to know who carries it locally. Apart from bow building, I'd use it next time I need to do a floor. I just love olive wood.  :bigsmyl:

Hi Pete I made two Russian olive bows Last summer One is still fine but my best one split on one of the growth rings right at the fade, bummer. I may just cut the top off the riser and glue a thin strip in or just a glue joint.
I sure would give the olive boards a go, Good Luck
Chuck

The boards are free, as are some Hickory, and Acaitia, so I think I will try to find the right grains and start with some simple Piramid types, 50# and under. To bad the best looking grain is the worst for making a bow.  :(

While it's unfortunate from an aesthetic perspective, it does help when sorting lumber. Others have mentioned lumber yards glad of getting the "boring" stock their customers pass up.

I won't have any for sale. It is going to be a search to find some suitable for my own use.

Now that I know it's available, I'll be looking for it. Olive wood is one of my favorites.
It would look amazing in a glass bow.
