Brace height for kids bow
« on: May 19, 2012, 04:45:00 PM »
Good Afternoon,
I have 2 kids bows ready to start tillering. One is an elm self bow and the other is a hickory backed red cedar.  Both are 48 inches long to fit into a travel case, gifts for my Grand children in Tanzania.  Any way looking for ideas for brace height and poundage.  One child is 6 and the other is 5 years old.  I am thinking under 20# at 20 inches.  Any thoughts?
Thanks
Bill

Bill,

I have made two attempts at self bow's and one of them that is still in use is an elm self bow that I messed up and squeezed a youth bow out of it.  Mine came out alot lighter than I wanted 8# at 20 inches but it sure is sweet!  I think 15-20 pounds at 20 inches would be fine.  I made mine at 48" too and brace is like 4-5"

On self bows the brace may be a little lower but my kids bows are about 5 to 6 inches.
My grand kids when 5 and 6 were shooting 15 # at 20 inches. Actual draw was maybe 15 inches.
They shoot the 1/4 inch wood arrows quite well.

yeah i would say about 20# at 20", and they'll pull less weight and length starting out and they can grow into it.

Brace height should be at least 5" to keep from slapping the hand (let alone the wrist).  Shoot em some and raise brace till they don't slap.
