MW's 2012 trade bow build...STRING LENGTH?
« on: June 05, 2012, 09:52:00 PM »
Hey all,

I've finally been able to start on my trade bow.  I've been running very behind this year after injuries to me and my daughter.  All is well, bones heal...but slowly!

Anyway, I've gotten through glue up on a reflexed hickory backed hickory bow with an ipe "power lam".  Everything went well during glue up, but I made it a bit thick.  I've beem tillering it down, just trying to get it on the short string as soon as possible (I've learned that lesson last year!).  I'm noticing one side is not holding the reflex as well as the other, as you can tell in the photo.  Right now, one side is holding almost a full inch more than the other.  What do I do to fix this?

Thanks!!!

Personally I'd just keep tillering and dont cut the handle until tillering is done so you can see which limb has a littl epositive tiller. Good luck. Looks great!

MW,

Sorry to hear about the injuries. Glad all is getting better.

Let me or Kelly know if you need some extra time do to your unfortunate circumstances. I'm sure it won't be a problem.

As far as the bow go's I would keep tillering until you get the limbs bending even and are able to get it on a short string as far as the set go's remember not to get in a hurry and don't pull it any further than you have until they are bending even then go a little more.

I'm sure some one will have a good solution to the problem but that's all I can think to do at this time.

On a bow with reflex like this, should the string length be 4" shorter than the knock to knock length, when the tape is laid flat on the back of the bow?

I usually end up around there MW. Usually I just use a bowyers knot during tillering and then build a string to the same length as it ends up at final tiller.
