Recurve question

I have a number of older recurves and they all have string groves cut into the belly side of the limbs. Are these groves necessary if a bow shoots good without them????

I think it helps keep the string in line or track properly. If you've ever had a recurve come unstrung upon release you'll know why they are there and appreciate them. It won't always do the trick if the limbs have some twist or are very unstable.

I won a Bear archery recurve in a raffle that didn't have them, I think it was a "black bear"? A friend wanted it so I didn't have it long, it pulled straight, no problems.. I barely file the grooves into the belly glass on my bows, I havn't had any problems with string tracking (alignment)
