Salvaged Trade Bow
« on: June 17, 2012, 09:19:00 PM »
This was to be my plan B trade bow.  It was tillered to 26" when I did a bone head mistake and broke it.  The pics below show how bad it was broken, and I put it to the side and started on plan C.

The pics below show the repair done to try to salvage it.  Basically I glued the break with smooth on and clamped it back together.  After allowing that to dry I then laid down pieces of 50# test braided no stretch fishing line similar to sinew and set it in more smooth on.  While it was still wet I did a wrap over the top of the horizontal strips.  This was allowed to dry, then wrapped the whole handle area about 5" past each fade with jute twine also set it smooth on. After it dried I ground the twine smooth and finished tillering.  After shootin in, it is 50# @ 28"

Here's the rest of the pics.

I've put around 300 arrows through it so far and has taken very little set and is holding at 50#.  I plan to give it to friend who is a bit of a collector of Indian items.  He has a 6' wooden Indian on display in his home, this will become the wooden Indian's bow.... Dan

I'm not normally a big fan of the tribal artwork on a bow but I really like that one

Yeah I'm with D.  I actually like that art on there!  Looks good... heck if your out hunting with it and you get board (not that that EVER happens) you could even play a game of backgammon!

Thanks guys for the good comments.  I just hate to give up until it's in 2 or more pieces.  Last year I broke a hophornbeam bow also.  I had half of a mulberry bow the same length and shape as the hophornbeam one so I spliced the two together and re tillered it.  Came in a little light for me so I gave it to my brother. It drew and shot real smooth for having 2 types of wood....Dan
