Frist success with fiber glass. a 64" r/d longbow
« on: June 18, 2012, 01:22:00 PM »
Hi All.

Got out and shot in my latest bow this morning.  I'm pretty please so far.  64" r/d longbow from the Bingham plans.  It pulls 43# at 26 inches.  this morning I shot 29" GT1535s with 100grn inserts and 75 grain points.

I haven't applied any finish yet. I wanted to be sure it was a decent shooter before spending too much time on the finish.

The lams are bamboo (from flooring) and a strip of maple. The glass is .050 and the total taper in the lams is .004/inch.

It shoots well.  Better than I am capable of.  The flyer in the pic with 4 arrows was because I goofed the release.

I'll update this post when I get a finish on it.  I'm planning on tru-oil and gloss poly.

Thanks Sam. Is this Sam from poorfolksbows?...if so, this is actually your fault....my first bow, the one that got me started in all this was a red oak long bow I built following your build a long.

Thanks for all the help!!!!!

Nice job!  Givin' me the itch!  Last built a selfbow about 25 years ago.  Been thinking of crafting a R/D for a while now.  May just have to bite the bullet and do it...

Thanks everyone.

Menatkin, it's been a fun process.  It took me three tries to get the correct amount of glue and the clamp pressure strong enough.  But I have to say it feels pretty good to be shooting a bow you made yourself.  I say go for it!

The the next one, I'll plan on making the riser a little deeper (from back to belly) so I can cut the arrow rest closer to center.  Mostly so I have more options on arrows.
