I would add that when I have enough trees to choose from, I go for cleanest wood I can find even if it isn't perfectly straight for selfbow staves. we can make it straight if necessary, but you can't make it clean. I prefer to cut trees 10-14" in diameter. is much easier to handle the cut pieces, they can surely be quartered, and perhaps yield more than that.
for board stock, I go for the straightest trees I can find. there's always gonna be waste when cutting slats. straightest stock possible is more important for making good board stock, imo.
