Help me order some new arrows!
« on: February 25, 2008, 05:08:00 PM »
I'm down to my last two usable aluminum arrows.  I think I want to try something a little stronger spined and durable for myself.  (I've been using 31" 1816 FallStalkers and they've all bent and/or broke nocks)

I want to place an order for some new arrows to try and shoot for a while.  I still haven't figured out how to calculate the weight, spine, etc, so you tell me what you would try.   :help:

I'm shooting a Longbow
68"
40# at 28" (I draw a little more)
Brace Ht is about 7 1/4"

I'll try anything; wood, aluminum, carbon, adamantium steel...anything!

I'll probably keep destroying them since I still suck, so I guess I should'nt splurge on expensive custom wood, but I'll try any vendor y'all would recommend and place my order tonight and hopefully have something to shoot by the weekend!   :)

I see that 3 Rivers has a carbon arrow that's not expensive and has a deflection of .600.  Might want to go that way because of durability.

Replace some nocks?
Try a 1916 with a heavier head?

I like aluminum. I like wood, too. Ready to make some woods?
If ya shoot enough to break them, ya shoot enough to make them.

I agree with Bowmania, if ya shoot those .600 deflection carbons full length and shoot at least 145 grain point weight, I think ya will be in good shape. ya can also foot them with a piece of aluminum shaft and they will be about indestructable. Shawn

I agree with Killdeer.  I'm a fan of aluminum with my recurve bow....have been for forty-couple years.  I also like cedar.

Seems like aluminum gets bent so quickly (I don't know if I was deflecting of the target frame or what, but I just bent two while at practice!

Killdeer, I wouldn't even know where to start making arrows.  I think by the time i buy all the tools, etc. I would rather spend my money on arrows since I need all the practice I can get right now.  :)

George, do you shoot aluminum for hunting too?  Do you just switch from field points to broadheads?

The Fall Stalkers you are using are soft, meaning the aluminum will bend easily.  I have some GGII's in 1816 that are made of a harder aluminum.  Let me know if you are interested.

Get up with Paul at BadgerArrow. You won't be disappointed- He's an artist, his prices are reasonable, and the service is outstanding. Promise.

Also have to give respect to Paul's competitor, John, at Sipsey River (sorry Paul!). In all seriousness, you WILL NOT find two better guys to order from. Both have gone the extra mile for me, and that means a lot.

I'd go with carbon-especially with your lower draw weight as I believe they will give you better penetration.

I agree with BadgerArrow. A higher grade shaft such as an XX75 will yield a more durable arrow. I think you should be close with the 1816 or a 1916, depending on length and point weight.

Killdeer is right. I shoot 27" Camo Hunter 1816s out of a 40# recurve with a 25 inch draw. Your 1816s were spined way too weak at 31 inches  for your  28 inch draw and that may account for your arrow problem. Go  with Camo Hunter 1916s with alum or GT Entrada 600s or epic 600s in carbon.-Pup

I started making arrows with stuff I already had in the garage.  The only real tool I had to buy was a true center taper tool.  I already had stains, paints, poly, and a fletcher.  Arrows don't have to be pretty or fancy to fly good.  I like taking my nice pretty, fancy ones to shoots just to show them off. But in the back yard I would rather shoot ugly plain arrows so when I break one or loose one it don't hurt near as bad.

SO I finally got some new arrows today.

I got some carbon Gold Tip Expedition Hunters 5575 with 125gr field points.  I liked shooting them but I really need to work on my 20yd shot placement still.  :)

How do you think those sound?
