Basswood for arrows?
« on: August 16, 2012, 12:46:00 PM »
Howdy folks,
I need a little input from the folks with some experience with basswood for arrows. I don't see to many people talking about it. I did purchase some blanks a while back and made some really nice arrows out of them. They worked good, fly great, but I broke one on the first trip to the target. May have been due to grain runout but I bounced the arrow off the side of the target and hit the ground at an angle and it broke about 3 inches foward of the fletching. Haven't got to do much testing other than that.
The reason I would like hear from some folks that have shot basswood more extensively is I found a 24 inch diameter, 18 foot long that is clear and in great shape, freshly cut. I can buy it for next to nothing and I know a guy who will cut it up into boards for .25 cents a board foot. I have a good place to stack and sticker it while it seasons. But, I would like some opinions on whether it would be worth the money and effort since I don't have much experience with it and I don't see a lot of people shooting it.
Thanks
JY

Here's a pic of the ones I already done.

This may be better anwsered in the PowWow, but when I make arrows I know it is best to have the wood riven cut so that you do not have run out. Riven cut is typically done by splitting the wood not by cutting. So if the guy cutting the basswood cuts just a few degrees off you will have some dangerous arrows. best of luck to you on this project and keep us updated on what all happens... possible show us how you build arrows.

well i do not know anything about basswood but people (me included) generally are using
bamboo, river cane, pine shafts, wild rose (oh yes this is real fun to work with)...

recently i am pouring the marine adhesive (polyurethane) (english friend of mine said, they are calling it gorilla glue, i don't know if this makes a sense for you?) into the holes of both ends of river cane arrows to make it stronger at ends. since glue is generates bubbles like foams and when it dried it is hard as rock.
so self nocks are not easily broken.

best.

ps: this is adhesive:
