What type of wood is this and would it make a good selfbow?

Sapwood looks kinda punky. How long was it down?

Bark looks like elm, wood looks like osage. Hmmmm, elmsage maybe???

Get the bark off first and get down to the first ring. Then take another pic. Rings are pretty tight and look good. Might make a good bow?
Judging from the bark I'm gonna say that it could be osage, but getting the sap wood off will remove all doubt.

Turn the stave over and take a picture of the wood. Does it have interlocking grain? How did it split?

X2 on elmsage. A rare hybrid genetically engineered by the government in an attempt to grow trees that produce pre-backed staves. Others produced by the program include the hickoripe, the bois d'boo, and the hedgeory.

I responded to the other thread..  It does look loke american elm, but that doesn't split easily.  I think it's chinkapin oak..

I was in northern Michigan bowhutning a friends land and he has a bunch of these growing amongst tamarack and white cedar. The trees he has are a spittin image of this one and they arent elm. The inside looks elmy, but the bark sure doesnt to me.

Who cares, it looks like good straight wood. Make a bow out of it and let us know how it turns out. It could be our first 66" ntn elmsage with hickoripe tip overlays, bois d'boo riser and a chinkapin oak handle overlay. Some great possibilities.
