All wood Asiatic inspired static recurve
« on: October 18, 2012, 06:03:00 PM »
Hey all ... Here's an all wood bow I made that was inspired by the static tip asiatic recurves.

It's made from two laminated 1/4" slats of red oak, 1.5" wide, 48" long. 6" siyahs on each end made of lamnated thin poplar. Jatoba tip overlays. red oak and poplar riser. Kind of hybrid longbow type riser shape.
Backed with TBIII and backing "camoflaged" by coloring with black sharpie and then sanding it off until it looked speckled/striped.

Probably pulls about 45-50lbs at 25-26" ... as anyone who follows my posts knows I never really measure cause they're all for me!

Hope you enjoy!

Little Ben, I like the way you think! Nice bow. How 'bout a close-up of that sharpie camo? Always looking for ideas I can afford...

Hello LittleBen!
Great bow, phantastic   :)
Do You taper the slats in thickness or in width and what are the dimensions of the handle?

With Regards from Austria,

Peter

Peter,

All the way from Austria! My grandmother was raised in Vienna until WWII.

Anyway.
The slats are tapered in width mainly , then in thickness to even things out a bit. Handle is 1.5" wide x roughly 7in long I would say.

Don't know squat about the characteristics of this design, but that looks real cool. One question I have is that the handle fades look like they end where the slat begins. Isn't there a danger of the handle popping off with the pressure from the bending limbs concentrating at the joint.

RAzorback,

Yes absolutely a risk. I try and taper them in very progressively, theres also an overlay in the front of the handle which extends just past the fades. All in an attempt to avoid what you mentioned. With a shelf cut-out so far, the handle popping off would probably result in total self destruction at the cutout.
