Source for riser-sized black phenolic?
« on: November 29, 2012, 11:51:00 AM »
I've got a customer that wants one of my bows with the center flare in black phenolic. I'd need a piece about 1 3/4'X3"X19". I called Binghams and Old Master Crafters, but neither of them carry it that large. Anybody got any ideas without having to buy a full panel?

McMaster Carr also has it.   McMaster Carr   Garolite is a trade name for basically the same thing. My guess is that G-10 general purpose will work fine. Most of the garolite they sell is available in black. They have about the friendliest, most helpful staff you'll find. I order stuff from them pretty much every week at work.

last two batches of G-10 i purchased from McMaster Carr came out striped with grey lamination's in it.
this stuff was only 3/8" thickness though.

i found a local source i prefer now.

or.... you can try Try Dale Stahl i think he can get the solid stock. be sure you stay with an epoxy base phenolic what ever you do. the linen phenolic has too much flex to it.

Rosewood archery sells the paper based phenolic in 2" x 4" x 39" and wider, great supplier and great quality phenolic.

Price is reasonable, I think it was $61 for the whole chunk.

Good ??'s, I would think the paper phenolic wouldn't have the strength needed. Maybe I'm wrong? Do the fibers in the linen phenolic show up after the finish is sprayed on it?

I've used the paper based from Rosewood for years, but only in large pieces (risers).  I have never had an issue.  It seems to get a little brittle when ground for accents or wedge fades...for that stuff I still use linen.
Also, it finishes out no different than linen.
The riser below is solid paper based.
Hope this helps...

Good looking riser Jared.
I have only ever used the paper based for a tip overlay. but then I found out that many of the older 59 Bears would crack and fail so I was afraid to use it after that. I have only used the Linen since. But It looks like Jared and I am sure others have had great success with paperbased. I may have to check out the new stuff.
I don't have any trouble getting the phenolic to look nice, Sand it out and spray away.

Kirk, Still wondering what the product is that you use from pro plastics? I am not sure what I got last time and I am in need to order more so I wanna see if it is the same. My pro plastics is in OH.
