limbs not aligned after using binghams jig
« on: December 15, 2012, 09:24:00 PM »
After using binghams jig, my index pins are off and the limbs are not in line. I checked alignment several times and thought I was good. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks

Yes they are terrible jigs. years ago I got one and it never worked. I checked it with a micrometer and the sidewalls that go down around sides of handle or limbs were like 6-8 thousandths different from one to the other so how you could ever use the center line is beyond me. I have heard many say they dont work, call and see if you can get money back.

Only thing I can think of is to remove the pins and fill with bondo or something epoxy. Then redrill in a in a,different spot
Been years since I used the jig but remember it was not easy to get aligned.

Yeah, I pretty much go about it differently but still use the jig. Starting with the limb, I knock all the bowsnot boogers off it and make sure it is perfectly square on one side of the limb.  Use a mic to scribe a line on the limb butt and make sure it lines up with my center line on the limb.  Put the jig on and drill both holes.

Now for the riser:  I basically make absolutely sure that one side of the riser is perfectly square, this will be my shelf side, same side as the one I squared on the limb.  Then use a mic to mark the center line on the riser.  I then place the jig over the riser and make sure I bisect the line with both the bolt and pin holes.

I drill the bolt hole only and remove the jig. Tap and put the insert in. Bolt the limb blanks on, Then using the center line on the limb out near the break of the curve on my recurve limbs, place a bit of fishing line stretching from tip to tip on my limb blanks.  I basically flush it against a piece of perfectly flat granite counter top and make sure my center lines true up on both the limb butts and riser... Then drill the pin holes using a free hand drill through the limb butt, using it like a jig. Most times just tightening the bolt will keep it from moving, but sometimes I put a clamp on it too.

This gets me pretty perfect most times.  I usually have to very little limb straightening after.  They basically dont make a limb jig worth a darn, period.

Oh and yes, sorry, the fix... take some sawdust and epoxy, mix it up to make a paste and fill the holes. Let it cure and sand flat... will be like it was never drilled.

I use the jig similar to arrowlauncherdj. You can glue a hardwood dowel into the pin hole on your riser and then re-drill- bolt the limb on and re-drill the pin hole as described above.

Sounds easy enough. So if I drill through the limb and mix up the saw dust and epoxy, then sand flat, it will not be noticeable, even on clear glass? I had read about this method, but most applied an overlay afterwards, and I didn't wanna do that.

Don't think you need to drill through the limb to fix the holes where the pins are.

The pins if in the wrong place can be removed from the riser and those holes fixed.
If the holes in the limbs are also wrong just fill as described .
Should not have to,drill, all the way through in either case.

How far out of line are the tips, of not to far just use an 11/32 drill to clean out the bolts holes. I've had to do that before. If you re-drill make sure you clamp the limb to a block of wood so you dont splinter the glass on the far side of the limb. Also take a file or cone shaped stone to clean up the side where you start drilling or it will splinter also. Make sure your limb pads are square to each other a degree or two will really throuw the tips off too.

FYI we just did a set of limbs using the method Kunzie linked and the only tillering we had to do was move one nock in 1/8"

Amazing.

I have been using the same procedure as Kunzie above and it works great. So you could fill in the original pin holes in limb and riser with epoxy (may want to also use a hardwood dowel at least in the riser) and proceed as shown in the above link
