Glue for glueing tapered lams thick ends together?
« on: January 01, 2013, 10:46:00 PM »
I'm sure it's been asked before I did search but nothing came up. What is the best glue to use to glue the two thick ends of lams together with?

I use TB sec. GEL - after 60sec I can hold the glued up pair on one thin end...(45° angled)

I use Tite Bond II.  The key is to sand a pretty good bevel on the end of each lam to give more gluing surface.  I go greater than 45 degrees.

Thanks for the replies. I was going back in forth from Tite Bond to super glue. That brings up the next question. If I lay a tapered lam on my chop saw table a 90 degree cut wouldn't be 90 degree. So thought maybe that would be a good thing to take advantage of for more gluing surface. The bow I'm making has a steep angle peak on the back side and the splice will be just over the "hump". One thing for sure the bow I'm coping is just a 90degree cut, barely visible but it's a sqaure cut to my eye atleast. I know the glue just has to hold till it's pressed and glued up with smooth on but it's got me a little worried.

Here is how I do it, like John says, a longer angle is better,  look at pic 2 thru 6 on this page....

My bows don't have a huge hump, so not sure if they would hold up to it, test before glueup I reckon...
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Wow Kenny that's a impressive build along! Thanks a ton for that link and the time it took to put it together in the first place. That helped a bunch.

Same as mentioned before. One more thing, if you want to do a dry run to see if everything fits nicely, glue the lams together only before you actually glue up the bow. Because if you glue em together even before doing the dry run they most probably will come apart just right before the glue up.

For the most part I use verticle Bamboo flooring (77.5") long for lams, eleminating the splice. When I have used short material and had to make a splice in the lams I used sprig nails (5/8")to pin the lams inplace at glue-up, eleminating any movement during the lay-up and heat curing.
