What should I put my hickory backing on?

I have some hickory backing coming this week. I have some hickory, cherry, red oak and some maple board lumber to work with. Would any of the wood types work better with a hickory backing over the others?

I think a hickory backed cherry could turn out well, it's something I've been wanting to try myself.

Cherry and red oak and maybe maple. Hickory is strong enough to stand alone.

Given your choices, I would go for a hickory backed hickory (but I would trap the back), cherry (again, trapping the back), or maple (provided it is hard maple, not soft).  I wouldn't put it on the oak.  I like a good red oak board bow, but I would let it stand alone.

I've used hickory as a backing on hickory, hard maple and cherry.  The hickory and maple turned out fine.  The cherry failed but that was due to bad tillering.  I just finished cutting pieces for another cherry one this morning.  I'll find out how that goes soon I hope.
