How would you do this?
« on: January 12, 2013, 03:54:00 PM »
Hey guys I can not remember if I saw this here or who knows where at one time.

The guy was making a (I believe the correct term is) laminated longbow, where he was gluing thinner strips of various species into one longer/biger piece to make the riser and the limbs. So it is multiple layers, colors.

If I was paying attention, he made reference to glueing a few shorter lenght laminate boards together to get the lenght he was after.

does anyone know about doing this? I wish I could describe it better, or give  link, but was tirerd when I found it and cannot remember where, should have put it in my favs.

Can you tkae 2 short peices say for example 18" ech and glue them together to use in a lamination for say a 34" limb for your recurve or longbow builds?

I deffinatlly do no know that, so I come to you guys who have more expereince.

Thanks guys,

Kevin

Kevin, I don't think it would be a good idea to glue up short pieces to make limbs. I think that it would lead to a failure down the road. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong here).
I've seen pieces glued together at the riser, but each piece was the length of one limb and the glue joint was supported on the belly side by the riser and on the back by a backing of some kind.
The only time I saw short pieces being used was on glass laminated bows. The veneer on the back which goes right under the glass can be glued up to give a nice pattern or accent strip.

Yep - Only in a glass laminated bow/ And it is in the fancy pretty veneers, not the core.
