Veneers on back of glass bow.
« on: February 06, 2013, 03:55:00 PM »
I saw a mention of this on another thread and thought I'd ask if anyone has put a veneer on the back of a glass bow. Outside the glass.

I always thought of putting Cherry Bark on the back just for looks or even dressing up some black glass with Curly Maple.

Did the veneer added outside the glass add weight to your bow?

I guess if the veneers thick enough to add weight to draw it won`t last the stress. Hm yea I`m pretty sure it`s like that...

Mike that was me.  I have seen veneers on the back of a carbon bow added after the initial glue up.  Not sure if or how much weight it added.  I'm pretty sure I read where sixby or Trux had done this for a fella.

I'm going to try a .020 on my next carbon lay up and see what the difference is.

Over carbon I am pretty sure over time the carbon will overpower the veneers and you are gonna get splinters popping up.Unless they have come up with a way to do it. I have heard of grinding clear glass down to .010 and putting that over carbon backs. The carbon needs to be on the back with nothing over it for the most benefit. Border bows may have come up with something I have not heard about to keep this from happening. And I dont think it would work all that well over glass.

I would have thought snakeskins would pull apart if I had never tried them.  They aren't much more than a piece of paper when dried but they hold up fine.

Oh well, Maybe thin is the key.  If I ever find the time I'll give it a try.
