Surface prep for TBIII?
« on: March 10, 2013, 11:45:00 AM »
I have a BBO blank awaiting a handle glue up. I had prepped the belly with a toothing plane planning to use Urac. Not having Urac now, I want to use Titebond 3 to glue 1/8" walnut slats to build up a handle. Does TB require a smooth surface or will it bond to the grooved surface of the belly?

Thanks for any advise.

2x
Also, you should not prep the surfaces until you are ready to glue up right then. The oxidation of the wood will have to be addressed if any time goes between prep and glue up.

CardboardDuck I am glad to hear you say that!!! I cringe every time I hear someone say use something like a hacksaw blade or toothing plane on the wood to break up fibers.Broken fibers are just that broken fibers and are subjeck to break even more. The people at titebond have experimented thousands of times to see how the glue and woods hold up best and have found just what you said works best.Well my rant is over and Steve do like  CardboardDuck says.

Take a lok at these two images. 120x.Two pieces of wood glued together The dark line is the adhesive line. The top one had surfaces  planed with a sharp knife and the bottom one is sanded with 36 grit sharp sanding paper. Judge for yourself which is most suited for gluing. Bue--.

Thanks folks. Smooth it is for TB. Gluing on about a layer a day. At 2 days / week to work on it, it's gonna take a while! Snapper... A rough surface is the recommendation for gap filling adhesives like Urac from everything I've read??? Going with the grain to maintain continuity of the fibers should minimize weakening the wood.
