Bocote darkening?
« on: April 12, 2013, 07:03:00 PM »
I have a few bows with Bocote in the riser and I know that it tends to darken over time, but just curious what your guys experience is with Bocote under glass. Once it is glued up is that the color you'll keep or does it darken under the glass as well? I can dye some veneers to match Bocote I'm putting in the riser that has had time to darken up, but if the veneers are going to darken over time I don't want to dye them and have them turn real dark. Thanks for any help, I appreciate it.

Anyone? I know someone out there can help out, I've seen a lot of Bocote used in limbs.

Thanks Kenny. I have seen it darken in risers but figured maybe the glass would keep it from changing. What causes the wood to darken anyways? Is it exposure to the air or sunlight? That's what I've heard but have never known for sure.

Part of it has to be air, you can set coco lams between other lams or boards an they still darken up!  Sunlite works on osage, you can speed it up like DVS did on his sage bow with a tanning booth!

Well thanks for the info guys. I'm getting excited to get this bow going, I think it's going to be a good shooter. The tanning bed is kinda funny but is a pretty good idea to speed up the darkening. Thanks
