Thoughts on fine tiller adjustment

Hey everyone,

I;ve been shooting ina  laminated bow lately, and probabyl have a few hundred shots through it. The tiller is a bit off now. Needs to be touched up for th elong run.

It's got 1/8" negative tiller ... I'd like to get to 1/8" positive or so.

Option 1: scrape away what little poundage I have. It's probably only 40-45# @ 26".

Option 2: gently heat the lower limb and bend into slight reflex, mayb 1/2"-3/4" or something.

It's laminated so I can't heat treat it, but I've used gentle heating before to improve/fine tune recurve tip alignment. Just not sure if enough of it will hold to make any difference in teh long run.

Any thoughts? I figure i'd lose maybe 2# by scraping the upper limb a bit.

Maybe I scrape the top limb and try to heat both limbs into a bit more reflex for more draw weight ....

What glue did you use?  You probably won't be able to add heated in reflex with a lam bow. You could cut down the length of the weaker limb to increase its strength.

What makes you feel the tiller is 'wong' where it's at? How's it draw and shoot?

I'd suggest shortening both limbs and then retillering. If you shorten the upper limb to bring the tiller to where you want it the balance of the bow will be off.

Shortening both limbs will increase the bow weight. Retillering after that might yeild you a tad more finished weight.

A negative 1/8 th isn't bad as long as it shoots well. How do the arrows fly? How's the bow feel when shot?

Since your from Virginny, ya could always wrap duct tape around the bottom limb, them boys from West Virginny swear by it for fine tunning the tiller...

Pat, I use TBIII. I'm talking very low heat, similar to the way hot water is used to correct limb twist in glass bows. Maybe 150degrees farenheit.

haha I like that plan Roy. I already got my camo duct tape ready.

Regarding cutting the limbs down, I'd have to take alot off, maybe an inch off each at leastm, that'd bring me to 62" and it's very recurved, so I'd lose nearly an inch of reflex cutting an inch off each limb.

Honestly Roy and Bowjunkie the boy shoots great. It's incredibly accurate, my best yet. The reason I wanted to redo the tiller, is to hopefully improve the tuning for stringwalking. Gets a little crazy shooting with any substantial crawl down the string more than 3/4" or so.

Gap shooting or instinctive I have no problems, I can group my field points well to 35yds or so, but stringwalking for closer shots is just so out of tune I was hoping some negative tiller would help.

Thansk for all the advice. Maybe I'll just leave it as it is and move onto making more bows ....

All TB glues will release at 150deg(F). I'd say the heat was not an option.
  Is the bow recurved or reflexed?

Ben when you start string walking with wooden bows, your asking for trouble. That will put more positive tiller in your bottom limb. Ask me how I know:) And your not going to get good up and down arrow flight string walking, besides string walking just isn't Traditional Son:)

The bow shoots great and you can group well at 35 yards? I wouldn't change a thing on it. Just make another one:)

LOL Ben. When I shot a recurve, I did walk the string. And it is a deadly accurate way to shoot. But with wooden bows, it just doesn't help the tiller of the bow.

I got that info right from the TB horses mouth. I called their tech support.It is useful info if you need to remove a backing though. Thats why I called them.

I hear you on that Roy. I'm pretty sure string walking is what through off my tiller .... I guess me and my bow are just never destined for FITA gold.
