tip overlay dimensions?
« on: June 17, 2013, 12:22:00 PM »
Hey guys, quick question.  How much phenolic (as in thickness) do I need on the tip overlays to make my bow fastflight ready? Also, how long should the overlays be? half inch past the knocks?

My plan is to have phenolic on the limb with cocobolo on top, is this fine or do I need the phenolic to be in contact with the string?

Use the search function, type in "phenolic tips" .there should be a few pics there, myself I file thru the thin piece of wood and into the phenolic for my string grooves. I also use black and red glass in my tips with no problem. I use pieces 2 inches long usually use 1/16 or 1/8 inch thick phenolic

On this longbow starting with the back glass I used 030 black glass, 030 red glass, a 1/16" thick piece of phenolic and last a piece of 020 bubinga veneer..The portion of tip above the top of the string groove is 11/16" long. I use a cupped stringer and the 11/16" works good for this type stringer

this pic is one of the first bows I built..has 030 white glass, 1/16" black phenolic, 030 white glass and a 020 wood veneer on top. I filed thru the wood and white glass got into the phenolic just a little.. I think the tip extends about 5/8" above the string groove? If you only have phenolic and thin cocobolo I would think you would want to have at least 1/8" of phenolic. maybe someone else will add to this thread.

I use 2 - 1/16" phen, and a pc of riser wood about the same.

I start the overlay about 3/4" toward center from nock groove, and when I angle 45* across limb to do nock groove it moves the nock groove away from the feathered end of overlay some.

The outer part past nock groove is up to your preference, it really only does anything on the part between grooves on edges of limb.

That said, I dislike pin nocks cause the string always falls right off em when not strung....

My nocks end up a lot like Roberts top one.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Thanks for all the info everyone!  Glad I asked instead of going straight to glue haha.

I also use two pieces of 1/16" phenolic and generally a wood overlay.  Three 1/16" pieces are much easier to bend to conform to the shape of the limb vs one 3/16" piece.  I usually glue the three pieces together on the limb, but not to the limb and then rough taper and shape then glue them to the limb.  Works well for me but, I am a bit weird.
