Horse bows
« on: August 30, 2013, 08:09:00 PM »
Can someone direct me to a good thread or other reference to these type of bows with the static recurve (siyah) I am curious about the design and ideas on making one. I have made most types of bows and need direction to possibly venture into one of these bows. Thanks

Get Adam Karpowicz book about the Ottarman(sp) bows. He gives step by step instructions and a good description of the different varieties of Asiatic horn bows.

I have not made a lot of bows. But I have been intrigued by horse bows. I plan on making as many as my budget will allow. Every shape size and type. They just get my blood warm.
As Pat posted ,If you are going to make one Get Adams book the insights of the ottoman bows do apply to all horn and sinew bows with cores of wood. The binghams bow wood thickness guide will help to give you an estimate of wood core thickness and width. Starting your bow sal area or active limb to horn core wood  sinew ratio at  1:1:1 then  pre tiller your wood core and horn before backing with sinew. Germany has a site called fletchers corner but it is in German you will have to use a translatter or use google chrome. Very good articles at atarn has a very good forum but they are organized more as a historical site with a  preference to keep to replication of bows. I find their site one of the most historically correct and artistic. Simply amazing. Some Day I will make a replica of a certain type and time.

But if you choose to make a horse bow, the one to start with I would recommend the Hun or Magyar bows they will be less intimidating or less over whelming not as much reflex the siyah will be around  40 degrees. The thickness and width will be close to what the bamboo backed bows are if you want a hunting class bow.

I think anyone who understands what wood is capable of in a selfbow. Knows what the forces are doing to bows of two wood and trilams on each side of the glue line and what is happening with glass bows has the certainty of success if they keep at it. But having said that you also have to understand that no organic material is perfect and you will have to make reasonable corrections as you work on your bow.

Do your research completely, take notes which ever way works for you.

Adam Karpowicz His book Is: Ottoman Turkish bows manufacture & design

Just google it you will see a bunch of them that are very pricey but they are hardback books keep looking for his web site he sells a soft back book for $40 or so. It takes a while to get his book 4 to 6 weeks.
Thomas has a dvd at 3 rivers  http://www.3riversarchery.com/The+Way+of+the+Bow%3A+The+Korean+Horn+Bow_i7821_baseitem.html
They are a Sponcor I think I can leave there address.
Luck to you.
Joe
