glueing phenolic, help needed!
« on: September 10, 2013, 10:10:00 PM »
Wans't sure what to use for glue up on phenolic so I roughed it up, scored it and then wiped and re-wiped phenolic and osage block with 91% alcohol. Used unibond. Put on the long string and went to tiller tree just to check things out. Tiller looked good at short pull so I took it down and was going to exercise the limbs some and check weight. 1 short pull, 2 short pull and whap! Riser falls off. I have never had this problem with wood to wood and TBIII. What in the world do you glue this stuff up with? I have used small pieces for limb tips and used epoxy with no problems. Would like to put a piece on the back just for looks. Can you use epoxy to glue phenolic to wood?

I think smooth on would be the best.
Always thought unibond probably would not work.

I sand it with 120 grit then wipe with acetone and use smooth-on.  Never had it fail.

X4 smooth on, no failures at all apart from human intervention   :bigsmyl:    rough it good with 40 grit and clean and away you go.

I second the smooth-on

epoxy and polymers = good choice.

Whenever you get into the non-porous and synthetic matierials like phenolic I'd personally be using epoxy. Lots of things bond wood ... plastic, not so much.

As far as I know Unibond is only for wood to wood glue joints.
