Need help with bow ID and problem
« on: September 15, 2013, 07:26:00 AM »
I was given this bow recently from my brothers' father-in-law.  I'm not sure who made it.  I was hoping someone could help.  The glass is different looking than what I'm used to working with.  It's got a woven pattern to it that is very obvious, and it's relatively thick.  It also looks like there's either a carbon or a black fiberglass lam in the limbs.
The problem is that I noticed an area on the lower limb right at the end of the riser where the glass on the belly is rough, like it's been compressed too much and is now coming up.  Not like it's delaminating, everything looks good in that respect.  It's just rough.  IDK.  I'll just shut up and show the pics to see what you guys think.

What I'm wanting to do is sand the whole thing up, get the glass looking smooth, get that ugly glued-on leather off, and finish her up nice.  Would I be okay sanding that funky glass back to smooth?  There's a little bit on the top limb, in the same place, but only a couple little bumps on the edge.  Any help is appreciated!

I'd sand it till it looks good. That stuff looks like its .050 or more in thickness. I wouldn't expect a problem but could be wrong. In terms of ID I can only say that it is old. Maybe like a Herters catalog bow?

Do you have any idea what the "OD" would mean?  I'm just curious more than anything.

My best guess is an old Herters bow with old style glass. I wouldn't try to sand it flat as you'll lose weight and are likely to change tiller. That woven pattern is just what the older glass looks like. Its probably over 50 years old and hasn't broken yet so I'd just shoot it as is.

Post it on the collectors page. Someone there might have a better idea of where it came from.

To me those white spots show that the structure of the glass lam has been overstressed or even damaged. I wouldn't invest to much time and hang it on the wall. I have used glass with a similar woven pattern on two bows and after some time they started to show the same spots just after the fades. Later I found out that the fades runned out way to steep and caused the mechanical overload of the glass.

I agree that the glass appears to be damaged ... I'd say either shoot it if you're the daring type pr just hang it on the wall. Taking away glass by grinding is not going to strengthen it thats for sure.

Andy, those fades do look awfully steep to me.  I think I'm gonna try to sand it out just a little bit, and put some nice finish on her.  That birdseye maple just looks like it needs to pop.  I think I will shoot her just to see how she does.  If it goes okay, I've got some camo fabric I may put over the white glass and maybe try to take her hunting.  idk.  I really don't need another bow, but I'll never turn one down!

I agree with talkingcabbage...  Those fade outs are awfully steep.  On of my first bows I made had the same problem.  It showed stress in the same spot.  I still shoot it every once in a while, but, with safety glasses
