« on: October 04, 2013, 12:03:00 PM »
I posted here not long ago and asked for some advice/help getting pointed in the right direction in regards to bow building....all I have to say is Thanks alot everyone....you've all gone and done it for sure....way to go,  ha-ha real funny......I have this chunk of change all put aside for a bow I was planning to order....and now what,  I brainwashed myself into using that money to buy a new band saw from Grizzly.  How did I let this happen!?

I've only met a few guys that "turned it off", most of us are neck deep with no sign of stopping!

I gave a 3/4 hp, 14" Grizzly and love it. They are affordable and solid.

Well I settled on the G0555x 14" Extreme series ....got a 1.5 Hp motor and cast iron wheels ....it'll be my first band saw and from what Ive researched,  it should be a pretty good one and serve me just fine.  Can't wait to get it dirty!!!  I know you folks over here are building all kinds of bows...and Im trying to soak up the info as fast as I can get my hands on it...Im gonna start with glass bows.  I like anywhere from 60 to 64 inch R/D and hybrids.  Think the first form will be for the 62 hybrid.  Once I get my saw,  Ill build my first form and oven....then its off the races with crossed fingers and the will to learn  :bigsmyl:  !...................

While Im here,   what is the best TPI count to be running while cutting out my risers and trimming limb widths?  Im guessing HIGH and just cut slow and careful?

Well just be fore warned here, cutting glass limbs out on a band saw is very hard on the blade. I only make wooden bows so someone else will have to help you with the best blades to use for glass. I would say a fine tooth blade like 6 tpi. I know some guy's use a belt sander in place of the band saw to get their glass limbs to the proper profile. A word of caution here, wear a good respirator while cutting and gloves might be a good idea too. Also before going into the house, blow the dust off your body and cloths. Good choice on the G0555X.

Good looking out Roy,  I know the respirator is a MUST!  And dusting off,  a great tip and I will make use of all the great tips for sure.  I have notice/read that the belt sander is used alot in place of the saw for trimming glass limbs...so maybe Ill end up going that route (Tons of dust though Im sure)

I have a Rikon 14" bandsaw. For cutting glass, I use 3/8" 3-4TPI skip tooth blade.  The glass will make the blade pretty unusable for cutting wood after that, so buy an extra one for cutting your riser to shape.  I have been getting them for about $20 at Highland Woodworking

 http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/384tpibandsawblades.aspx

The other tool that I found indespensible was a oscillating spindle sander.  I have a delta, but I think you can get a serviceable one from Harbor Freight.  I use 50grit sanding drums to do the rough shaping.

Good luck!

I'm circling the drain right there with you. I bought the same band saw. I just put on the 4 TPI Lennox blades Kenny recommended and fixing to resaw lams and veneers this weekend.

Oh yeah, for your sake, I hope there isnt a good wood place that has exotics (bocote, cocobolo, etc)anywhere near you. You will wind up with an expensive lumber yard....

Beachbowhunter,   yeah Im lucky (I guess)there is no such wood place close by.   Though I have already started looking online for pieces just to have around as "stock".   I have a piece of osage trunk about 4 inches thick and 5ft long that I brougt back with me from Indiana when I was hunting out there for a few weeks in 2010.  Originally brought it back for something else....but it may make good riser, riser overlay, tip overlay material....im excited to start sawing it up!!!!

Norb, tune the saw to the nuts first by the book, and saw some cheap wood lams first to see if the blade cuts straight.

I haven't had to adjust the fence on either Griz saw I've had. Only luck I've ever had!! LOL
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Kenny, the new blade went on nicely and it is tuned to the nuts. Just need to test the fence for wander and then go for it!
