Splicing Laminatons
« on: October 18, 2013, 06:26:00 PM »
I need to splice some laminations and have never done this before now.

I did a search and found very little info on splicing laminations.

Any tips on the amount of angle, glue, the process or anything else woulld be appreciated.
If I'd known that I would live this long I'd have taken better care of myself.

Haven't done this for a long time.
You can just bett splice but a 45 degree angle works better I think.

I lay them together, put a backing piece behind them, and cut them on a 45 on my miter saw. Then I groove the little gluing surfaces with a toothing plane blade so the joint won't be starved of glue. I use Smooth On epoxy, wrap them with plastic wrap, and clamp them to my flat workbench... set a desk lamp near them and throw a towel over them to retain the heat. This makes fo a strong joint and they'll stay together even when bent into a strong deflex. I had less success with superglue and smooth surfaces.

Thanks for the info everyone, the links are a big help.

Bowjunkie, are you cutting the 45  where you see the angle cut when you look at the side of the lamination or are you cutting from one outside edge angling down to the other when looking at the width of the lamination?

Check out some of Troy's spliced lams and he may be able to chime in and give some tips as to what he does.

Well I think I misunderstood your splice question...looks like you are talking about splicing to lams end to end rather than the example I gave...note to self read the whole thread...

What I want to do is splice some 36" dyed actionwood lams together at the butt so I can have a long lam to go on the back of a one piece recurve that doesn't have a gap between the lams on the back of the riser (the front of the bow, not the belly). I will be using one long clear piece of glass over the laminations on the back of the bow. I will also add some overlays on the front of the riser so the splice desn't have to be pretty but I want it to hold up during the layup where it bemds around the radius on the front of the riser.

Now that I tuned into your question let me try again...

I use a scarf joint to secure my two 36" lams into one piece. A little super glue, piece of plastic wrap and clamp it. A little lite sanding when it dries and you have one piece. If you take the time to line up the grain of the wood pattern you can hardly see the joint.

Here is a pick of a roughed out riser showing the back of the bow and the joint...

OK, I think I have enough info to give it a try. all the links gave me some insight on how others approach this task.  The link to the buildalong by Kennym shows exactly what I am trying to do. Another very helpful thread I found is also from Kennym, it shows how he made a jig for grinding the angles on the butt.

Thanks everyone.  If I can figure out how to post pictures on here I show y'all one of my recent builds.
