insert removal?
« on: October 29, 2013, 01:36:00 PM »
im working on refinishing a riser thats pretty beat up and it has an insert for a plunger/rest and i was wondering it there is any way to remove the goofy looking thing without harming the rest of the riser? i plan on patching the hole but i do not like the rest inserts on trad bows (personal preference of it doesnt look clean or trad like...) has anyone done this before? is it even possible? thanks in advance

I have never removed a plunger insert.  I have successfully removed the inserts for limb bolts several times.  I would think the same method would work.  I threaded a bolt into the insert and heated it in order to loosen the glue.  Quickly unscrewed the bolt and used a screw extractor to remove the insert.  Hope that helps.

I wouldn't bother personally but Jess's plan sounds sound.

I have removed several by using a drill press and a slightly larger drill bit. Drill from both sides and it won't bugger up the wood. One brass insert actually began to spin, which made for easy removal.
